Notwithstanding a protracted war, Japan can withstand both higher energy prices and rising interest rates. Strategic oil reserves are large. The corporate profit cycle upswing is broad based and investment spending remains brisk underpinned by the AI revolution and the substitution of capital for labour. Consumption is supported by strengthening private credit growth, real wages, returns on savings and high elderly labour market participation.
